Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter
Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - September 2024
August certainly dished out a generous helping of long, hot, dry days. It took its toll on both the staff and the turf alike. But the irrigation systems did their job, and with fall temperatures on the way, the courses are now poised for beautiful conditions throughout the fall golf season. This has been a year of wild swings in precipitation (over 72 inches year-to-day) and challenging weather events, but the crew continues to push forward, staying on task, completing all aerifications, and a tremendous amount of sod work on all three courses.
Following Hurricane Beryl, the clean-up effort did set the rough mowing behind, and I know this added a challenging new element to each of the courses. We have worked hard over the past few weeks to regain normal mow heights throughout the 54 holes, and we are nearly there. Thank you for your patience during this time, and we hope you didn't lose too many balls.
One of our August projects was to focus on sodding many of the historically bare areas, where trees have been removed, or out-of-bounds areas that are highly visible. This type of project tends to be very time- and labor-consuming. Our year-to-date sod procurement shows that we have laid 18 truckloads of sod! That's 3.5 acres of newly sodded areas that, in some cases, were bare for several years. This provides an instant improvement that you will notice as you make your way around each of the courses. With that project behind us, we're now able to focus on detailing, and we're excited about where each of the courses will be by the end of September.
The bulkhead project is nearing completion with the crew on Miller #10. A huge part of the project was bulkheading the creek along Miller #17, which required the hole to be closed for 2 weeks. We reshaped and redesigned portions of the tee area, and it turned out great.
We look forward to seeing you out on the course,
