April showers have brought us some green grass. Not sure that's how the saying goes, but we have greened up nicely. Two weeks ago, we sprayed all three courses with a pre-emergent and post emergent herbicide. This is working. We are seeing a lot of our weeds that popped up during the winter start to yellow and will eventually wither and die. I also anticipate a very clean golf course throughout this summer. The turf health overall is really strong and we are looking forward to mowing and edging the golf courses all summer long.
The bunkers on Weiskopf are all but complete, at this point. Some holes still have fresh sand but will be open for play very soon. The bunkers that are ready for play now are raked daily and have new bunker rakes in them for you to use once you've hit your shot. If the bunkers do not have a rake placed alongside the edge, I would ask that you continue to play these as Ground Under Repair until we put bunker rakes out around them. They turned out great. The combination of Jeff Blume, golf course architect, and Sanders Golf, the construction team, has provided us a much needed facelift to the golf course. I think the new look is fantastic and will bring in some new shots that you did not have before. First, the bunkers will play like championship quality bunkers and we will start to mow out new approach lines around the greens that we did not have before. This will force you to decide to either putt out, if off the green, or try to bump a 7-iron or perhaps a hybrid. Whatever you choose, I hope that you are satisfied with the new look.
Finally, this month we will begin cultural practices of verticutting and sanding every other week on our scheduled closed days. This will promote a smoother rolling putting surface as well as attack some of the grain.
I look forward to growing grass and watching everyone enjoy the golf courses over the summer.
