Dear Members,

What a summer this has been! Despite the sizzling heat, it's been fantastic to see so many of you out and about, making the most of everything Bentwater has to offer. Whether you've been out on the lake, working on your golf game, enjoying the new pickleball courts, or simply soaking in the summer vibes at the pool, the Club has been a hub of activity this summer, and we're just getting started. July is packed with celebrations, activities, and opportunities to connect, and we can't wait to share it all with you.

When we think of July, of course, Independence Day is top of mind, and this year, the holiday lands on a Friday, kicking off an unforgettable summer weekend! We're thrilled to bring back all your favorite 4th of July traditions, including the festive POA Parade, our delicious Freedom Buffet, the festive 4th of July celebration around the Club, and, of course, the grand fireworks show on the #10 Weiskopf fairway, proudly sponsored by the POA. It's one of the most anticipated days of the year, and we can't wait to celebrate with you and your family.

The excitement doesn't stop there! Camps and sports programs continue throughout the month, keeping our junior members engaged and active. From Kamp Bentwater to junior golf, tennis, and pickleball, our pros have another exciting month of programming in store for the kids. You'll find full details and registration for everything in the newsletter articles below.

Take a moment this month to dine-in and cool down! The Crescent Grille's new lunch and dinner menu has been a huge hit, and if you haven't tried it yet, now's the time. Whether you come in for a quick escape from the summer heat with a refreshing cocktail or to enjoy dinner with the family, the new menu offers a wide variety of culinary options for any occasion. You can view the new Crescent Grille menu in the Dining & Social newsletter below.

Finally, we have one "housekeeping" item for you this month. Our Accounting team has recently created a new email account that they will be using for communications and correspondence related to your Country Club account. We encourage you to save MembersAR@bentwaterclub.com in your email contact list. This will help ensure successful delivery of email messages to and from this new account.

Thank you for your continued support and for being part of what makes Bentwater so extraordinary. Have a fun, safe, and memorable 4th of July—and I look forward to seeing you around the Club all month long!

See you at the Club,

Golf Club Newsletter -
July 2025 - Dave Troyer, Director of Golf

img

img

As we stride into the brutal heat of the summer, it is important to take proper precautions for your own safety on the Golf Course.  Although water stations are available on the golf courses, we highly recommend bringing your own large container of ice water along with you.  Additionally, please make sure that you are protecting yourself from the sun with the use of sunscreen, hats, and even umbrellas to provide extra shade.  Proper preparation for summer golf in Texas not only will help keep you safe, but it will add to the enjoyment of your round.

Here is what you need to know from the Golf Department this month:

Respecting the Course:  Raking Bunkers

Bunkers are a vital part of golf course design—intended to challenge players, not frustrate them unfairly. At Bentwater, we take great pride in the condition of our courses, and that includes our carefully maintained bunkers. However, keeping them in top shape is a shared responsibility—and that starts with one simple act: raking.

Why Raking Matters

When a player fails to rake a bunker after playing a shot, they leave behind deep footprints, divots, and uneven sand that can severely impact the next player's ability to make a fair shot. Imagine hitting a well-placed approach shot into a greenside bunker, only to find your ball buried in a footprint or resting in a rut. It's not just frustrating—it's avoidable.

Raking bunkers ensures the surface is smooth and consistent for everyone. It's a fundamental courtesy that upholds the integrity of the game and shows respect for your fellow golfers.

Proper Raking Technique

To do your part, follow these simple steps:

  • Enter from the low side of the bunker to avoid damaging the steep faces.
  • After your shot, rake the area you disturbed, including your footprints and divot.
  •  Be sure to rake beyond the immediate area of your swing path to blend the sand evenly.
  • Once done, place the rake back where it belongs – on the outside of the bunker facing in the direction of play.

Course Courtesy = Course Quality

Raking bunkers isn't just about etiquette—it's about maintaining the overall playability and beauty of our course. Every player who takes a few moments to rake after their shot contributes to a better experience for all.

Let's continue to treat the course—and each other—with the respect the game deserves. At Bentwater, we pride ourselves on excellence, and that standard starts with every player doing their part.

Remember: Leave the bunker better than you found it.

Tips & Tricks

Picking a Spot for Alignment

Alignment is one of the most overlooked fundamentals in golf, yet it's one of the most critical elements for consistent ball-striking and shot direction. You can have a perfect swing, but if you're not aligned properly, your shot is already off course. One of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your aim is by picking a spot just in front of your ball to help with alignment.

What Is a Spot for Alignment?

A "spot" is a small target (like a discolored patch of grass, a leaf, or a divot) a few feet in front of your ball—directly on the line between your ball and your intended target. Rather than trying to align yourself to a distant flag or tree hundreds of yards away, focusing on a nearby spot makes setup more precise and manageable.

Why It Works

When you're standing over the ball, it's difficult to line yourself up accurately to a faraway target. The margin for error increases with distance. But picking a spot 1–3 feet ahead of your ball gives your eyes and body a much more manageable reference point. Professional players and instructors use this technique regularly because it simplifies the aiming process.

How to Do It

  1. Stand behind your ball, visualizing the line to your target.
  2. Pick a spot just a few feet in front of the ball on that same line—something easy to see and fixed in place.
  3. Walk into your setup while keeping that spot in your line of sight.
  4. Align your clubface first to that spot, then set your feet and shoulders parallel to your target line.

This method removes a lot of guesswork and helps ensure your setup supports your intended shot shape.

Course Management Starts with Setup

At Bentwater, we see it all the time—players make great swings but miss targets because their alignment is slightly off. Incorporating this simple routine into your pre-shot routine can dramatically improve accuracy, confidence, and consistency.

If you're unsure whether your alignment is dialed in, take a moment during your next round to lay a club down on the ground during a practice session. You might be surprised at how often your aim is off—even when it feels right.

Great shots start with great aim—so pick a spot and trust it.

Rule of the Month

Rule 2: The Course (Click Here)

At the heart of golf lies the course itself—the setting where challenges unfold and traditions thrive. That's why USGA Rule 2, titled "The Course," is one of the foundational rules every golfer should understand. While it's brief, Rule 2 plays a critical role in how the game is structured and played.

What is Rule 2?

Rule 2 defines how the course is divided into five distinct areas, each of which affects how the rules apply to a player's ball. Knowing these areas helps you understand what options are available when taking relief, how to play certain shots, and what penalties may apply.

The Five Defined Areas of the Course

According to Rule 2.2, the course is divided into the following areas:

  1. The General Area – This covers most of the course: fairways, rough, paths, and even trees. It's where most golf is played, and normal rules apply here.
  2. The Tee Area – Specifically the teeing area of the hole you're playing. It's important because Rule 6.2 allows special relief when teeing off, including re-teeing without penalty in stroke play under certain conditions.
  3. The Putting Green – The specially prepared area around the hole, where you're allowed to mark, lift, and clean your ball, and even repair damage to the surface (Rule 13).
  4. Penalty Areas – Marked with red or yellow stakes or lines, these include bodies of water and other designated hazards. Rule 17 governs how to proceed when your ball lies here.
  5. Bunkers – Sand traps that require unique considerations, such as limitations on grounding your club before the stroke (Rule 12).

Why This Rule Matters

Understanding which area of the course your ball lies in determines what you're allowed to do next. For instance:

  • Relief procedures differ depending on whether your ball is in a penalty area or the general area.
  • On the putting green, you have more options for marking and preparing for your stroke than anywhere else.
  • Specific rules protect the course—like restrictions on improving conditions in bunkers or the teeing area.

Takeaway for Bentwater Golfers

While Rule 2 might not come into play as often as others, it's the framework that supports many of the decisions you make on the course. A good grasp of these five areas will make you a more confident and rules-savvy player.

As always, if you have any rules questions during your round, feel free to ask our golf staff or review the USGA Rules of Golf app for quick clarification.

THE FINAL KAMP BENTWATER SESSION OF THE SUMMER BEGINS JULY 8TH!  REGISTER TODAY!!img

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the KE Camps program, we would like to take this opportunity to tell you more about it. KE Camps works exclusively with private clubs across the country to provide an expertly run and well-rounded camp experience. Their mission is to infuse the warmth and spirit of a traditional summer camp within the unique setting of our club. The KE Camps team looks forward to passing on their love of camp to your family this summer.

While KE Camps operates over 250 camps nationwide during the season, Kamp Bentwater is customized to our needs, utilizing Bentwater Yacht and Country Club's top-notch amenities, beautiful property, and athletic professionals. For the past 8 years, KE Camps has blended seamlessly with the atmosphere and flow of our daily club life. With that in mind, we keep the size of camp small, limited to a maximum of 35 campers per week.

What will KE Camps do for Bentwater Yacht and Country Club?

  • KE Camps will create and maintain a Kamp Bentwater webpage on the KE Camps website (https://kecamps.com/camps/bentwater-yacht-and-country-club), where you can view camp information and details. In addition, KE Camps will provide camp-related information to your family leading up to camp and throughout the summer.
  • KE Camps will recruit, hire, and train all camp staff, each of whom will have a passion for working with children in a camp setting. In addition to an extensive interview process, this includes performing appropriate background and reference checks, as well as requiring all staff members to be First Aid and CPR trained (at a minimum). The staff will consist of an on-site Camp Director as well as a team of camp counselors to provide an average staff to camper ratio of 6:1. In addition to being the primary contact for our families during the camp season, the Camp Director will work closely with the KE Camps management team as well as our own management staff to coordinate the details and logistics of camp. Information about our Camp Director will be provided as we get closer to the opening day of camp.
  • KE Camps will handle all camper registrations through their website, including collecting camper information (health histories, allergies, etc.), billing, and customer service. Located in New Jersey, the KE Camps management team is accessible year-round. During the summer, office hours are extended so you will always be able to connect with someone for any questions or concerns that come up. Communication with the KE Camps team includes phone, email, and live chat via their website.
  • KE Camps will plan and implement age-appropriate programming for our campers, ages 4 to 12. KE Camps is committed to providing a dynamic camp schedule, where campers will participate in a combination of athletic, creative, and educational activities – all while thriving in a supportive and encouraging environment. Each week's schedule will include a combination of Arts & Crafts, STEM Activities, Fun with Foods, Team-Building, Science Projects, Group Games, Wacky Wednesday Theme Days, Thankful Thursday Community Service Projects, and Friday Funday Spirit Days.
    •  *In addition, campers will participate in one golf, one yoga, one fitness, and one tennis session each week, led by Bentwater Yacht and Country Club pros, archery tag, as well as a daily free swim period, supervised by KE Camps lifeguards (along with the KE Camps staff team). For information about KE Camps' swim policies, click here.
  •  KE Camps will provide an inclusive and confidence-building atmosphere at camp for every camper. Through the tradition of earning SMILE Bands (Sportsmanship, Mindfulness, Inclusion, Leadership, Enthusiasm), camp provides an opportunity for character-building and personal growth. In addition, get ready for other fun camp traditions incorporated throughout the summer. It is these traditions that truly make it feel like camp!

Enrollment is now open for Club Members and Guests, providing the perfect opportunity to bring a friend to camp! KE Camps' flexible registration allows you to sign up for as many weekly sessions as you would like. Registration remains open throughout the season so as long as space remains available, you may add additional sessions. Tuition and lunch details can be found on the Bentwater Yacht and Country Club page of the KE Camps website.

Ahead of registration opening, we hope you will "save the date" for camp and mark your calendars for the following sessions:

  • July 8-11
  • Camp operates from 10am – 4pm, Tuesday-Friday.

We look forward to an enriching summer ahead, full of fun, friendship, and memories made at our club. We cannot wait to see your smiling campers this summer!

Summer heat is here! To beat the midday temperatures, consider enjoying your tennis and pickleball play during the early morning or late evening hours. With that in mind, we're excited to introduce a new recurring event: Thursday Night Tennis & Pickleball Social Doubles. Be sure to check the separate information section for full details.

Also, mark your calendars for one of the year's most popular social events, the Wimbledon Whites Racquets Mixer on July 12. You won't want to miss it!

A quick reminder: Please remember to reserve your tennis and pickleball courts before playing, even if the courts appear empty. Reservations help us confirm that those using the courts are eligible members. If you're on a court without a reservation, staff may ask for your name and membership number. This is not intended to inconvenience anyone, it's simply part of our efforts to protect the value of your membership and maintain the integrity of our facilities.

We look forward to seeing you on the courts!

Join us in our yearly tribute to the oldest and most dignified tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon. In previous years we limited ourselves to tennis for this event, but this year we're reaching out our afternoon tea cups to our pickleball friends as well.

Our tradition emulates Wimbledon in our requirement of all white attire for play. Beyond that though, we want you to have fun with the event by dressing for fun and success. We have many creative outfits every year.

Another Wimbledon tradition is their iconic strawberries and cream. We do our own interpretation with sweet cream ice cream and strawberries. This refreshing treat is more appropriate in the Texas heat.

We'll play tennis and pickleball doubles, games, and we will have some authentic Wimbledon prizes to give away to participants.

Your event fee includes non-alcoholic sports beverages and Wimbledon-inspired foods. The fee is $10 per participant.

Don't miss out. Register today on CourtReserve.

Ladies Tennis Open Play

SATURDAY MORNINGS

9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

THE RACQUET CLUB

The recurring Ladies Tennis Open Play continues in November, with meetings every Saturday morning at 8:30 am. As the name implies, open play is a recreational opportunity for ladies of all playing abilities. Simply register online and sign-in upon arrival. A member of the racquets staff will set the play schedule for the morning, and participants will rotate partners after each round.

Each round will consist of four games using no-ad scoring. If your court finishes the four games before others, play a tiebreak until they catch up. Rotate following each round during the two-hour session.

There is no fee for open play, but we ask that players bring their own gently used or new tennis balls for the session.

Pickleball Open House Celebration Wrap-Up

On May 31st we celebrated the official opening of our new 8-court pickleball facilities.  Over 40 members enjoyed music, snacks and open play following a brief opening comments. The Bentwater men's pickleball players chose to recognize one of their own, Gary Sewell, for his efforts to promote pickleball at Bentwater in its early stages.

We also announced that a shade structure has been designed as in in production for installation as soon as possible.

Thanks to all who attended and we hope all our members enjoy the facilities for decades to come.

 LESSON RATE INCREASE

In June we are raising our lesson rates for the first time in over 3 years. Despite the rate increases, our lesson and clinic rates are competitive for our area and industry. We appreciate your understanding.

 FRIENDLY REMINDERS

FROM THE RACQUET CLUB

Clean Courts

In order to keep the courts clean for the next member, please make it a habit to do a lap around the court before you leave and pick-up all tennis balls, personal items, and trash.  You can place tennis balls in the bins located around the courts or take them to the Front Desk inside the Sports Club.

Ball Machine

When you are finished using the ball machine, please put all of the tennis balls back into the machine before putting the machine away.  We recycle tennis balls and eventually donate them to local schools and animal shelters, so your effort here is greatly appreciated.

Racquet Club Etiquette

While on Racquet Club premises, during league matches or other official match play, whether it be tennis or Pickleball, please respect the players by switching all mobile devices to silent mode.   Thank you.

Thank You!!

January brought some challenging weather for tennis and pickleball enthusiasts. However, we made the most of the sunny days and managed to fit in our Ladies Play Day just before rains arrived.

Exciting progress is happening on our new pickleball facility! The site is currently under construction, with forms and groundwork underway as electricians begin laying conduit for the court lights and power systems. Once that step is complete, final grading and compaction will follow, and a vapor barrier will be installed. Concrete pouring will come next, requiring a minimum curing period of 30 days. Afterward, we'll be one step closer to enjoying brand-new courts.

Watching the daily progress, I'm struck by how expansive the new courts will be. With generous spacing between courts and fences, players can look forward to an unobstructed and enjoyable experience. I can't wait for the moment we hit the first pickleballs on these new courts!

Due to the unpredictable February weather and the temporary court space limitations during construction, we've decided to forgo special events for the month. However, many ongoing programs are still available, and we're planning some fantastic special events in March.

Please review the details in this newsletter and make plans to join us!

 Marina Newsletter - July 2025

img

img

As we welcome the hot, sunny days of July, we hope you're enjoying time on the water and making wonderful memories with family and friends. This is one of the busiest months of the year for our Marina, so I thought it would be a good time for some important reminders and updates regarding parking at the Marina and the Boat Launch ramp & parking area.

The Boat Launch Area

The Marina's Boat Launch parking area is designated and reserved for vehicles pulling boat trailers. This policy is in place to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for all boaters using the Boat Launch. We kindly ask that all other vehicles refrain from parking in this area. Any unauthorized vehicles parked in the Boat Launch area will be subject to towing.

Passenger Vehicles at the Marina

Yacht Club and Marina visitors in passenger vehicles are welcome to park in the Yacht Club parking lot. This area is reserved for your convenience while you're visiting the Yacht Club and Marina facilities and amenities.

Parking Duration Limitations

In order to ensure a pleasant and orderly experience for all, parking is limited to a maximum of 72 hours for vehicles and trailers. Vehicles and trailers that exceed this time limit are subject to towing at the owner's expense. We greatly appreciate everyone's cooperation to help keep the Marina facilities accessible for all members and guests.

As always, thank you for being a part of the Bentwater Marina community. We look forward to a fantastic month on the lake!

Happy boating!

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - Turf Talk with Scott Terry - July 2025

img

As we move into the heart of the summer, I would like to update you on the key agronomic practices and observations that are shaping course conditions this season. Your support and understanding are always appreciated as we work to keep the course healthy, playable, and beautiful.

Aerification—Short-Term Disruption, Long-Term Gain

We recently completed our summer aerification process. While this can temporarily affect playability, it is a critical practice that relieves compaction, improves oxygen movement in the soil, and enhances root development. In the weeks ahead, you will see turf health and recovery improve, setting us up for a strong finish to the season. One more greens aerification will be scheduled later this month and into August.

Weed Control—Staying Ahead of the Game

Our summer weed management program is well underway. With the combination of spot treatments and pre-emergents, we are targeting problem areas while minimizing any impact on surrounding turf. We continue to monitor and adapt as needed, especially with the variability in weather patterns.

Water Management—Every Drop Counts

With higher evapotranspiration rates, precise water management is critical. Our team monitors soil moisture daily using sensors and probes. We adjust irrigation windows to minimize wind loss and evaporation. Hand-watering hot spots is a frequent practice this time of year to aid in plant health. Fast and firm is the goal, and this can only be achieved through proper water management.

Homeowner Irrigation Runoff—A Growing Concern

We have noticed increasing instances of residential sprinkler systems overwatering into course boundaries, particularly along shared property lines. This can lead to turf disease from excess moisture, weed outbreaks due to overly wet soil, and erosion or soft spots near roughs and fairways, which lead to ruts and unsightly areas. If your property borders the course, we kindly ask you to ensure sprinklers are properly adjusted and not over-spraying onto the course. Often irrigation clocks are set on automatic by a landscape company and stay on when not needed. We are happy to assist or offer tips if needed—our goal is mutual stewardship of the landscape we share.

Hope everyone has a good July as the Dog Days approach. Keep filling those divots, and thanks for taking care of your course.

Scott Terry

Director of Agronomy
