May 2024 Club Newsletter
Dear Members,
May is a month full of anticipation for Bentwater. The school year is coming to a close, summer is about to begin, and this final stretch of cooler spring weather is a refreshing prelude to the busy summer months ahead. There isn't a better place to be than right here in Bentwater. Golf, tennis, pickleball, fitness programs, and fun days out on the lake are all part of why May is one of the best times of the year to enjoy this beautiful community.
I encourage you to review each of the articles included below to learn more about the wide variety of activities we have planned this month. The star of the show this month, of course, is Mom, and her big day is approaching fast. If you have not already made your Mother's Day Brunch reservations, we do have a limited number of reservations still remaining, but don't delay; we expect it will be full by the end of the week. You'll also want to make sure Mom has something to open during brunch. The Golf Shop's Mother's Day Sale begins this Saturday, May 4th, and has a great selection of ladies' golf and lifestyle apparel on sale at great prices. The sale runs through Mother's Day at both the Bentwater and Grand Pines Golf Shops. Sanctuary Salon & Spa is the icing on the cake and an easy way to make sure mom gets the pampering she deserves. Be sure to stop by the spa this week and have the staff help you pick out the best treatment for all of the moms in your life.
May is also a busy month for projects around the Club. We have several areas where improvements are underway, including drainage work and turf repairs on the golf courses. This is especially true on the Miller course, where several of the tee complexes have received new sod over the past month to repair areas damaged during winter dormancy. This is a great time of the year for golf, and we hope you're able to get out to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and see all that our agronomy team has been working on. The Yacht Club and Marina is another area where significant improvements have been taking place, including the renovation of the locker rooms that serve the Yacht Club Pool and Marina and the re-decking of Docks 1 & 2, which have given this area a fresh new look for our boating community to enjoy. We thank you very much for your patience throughout these important projects.
We hope you enjoy this month's newsletter, and we encourage you to try something new at the Club this month. We look forward to seeing you and your family at the Club, and we wish all of our Bentwater moms a very happy Mother's Day!
Respectfully,
(Click on the title of each section to open & close)

Mother's Day, of course, takes center stage this month, and it's approaching fast! We do have a limited number of reservations remaining for Mother's Day Brunch, so if you have not already reserved your table, you can do so by calling the Club at 936-597-6219, and the staff will be happy to assist. May also brings with it a few new events that you're going to love, including a fun Steak Night Date Night out on the Club Patio on Friday, May 24th. Chef will be serving up grilled to order USDA-certified Angus beef, double bone-in pork chops, Frenched Airline chicken breasts, and jumbo grilled shrimp! There's going to be an endless salad bar, a baked potato bar with all the fixings, along with Chef's incredible dessert table, among other tasty delights. You can reserve your spot today at the link shown below.
Speaking of grilling out on the Club Patio, Burger Bash returns next Wednesday, May 8th, and Chef will be back out on the patio grilling up your perfect burger and enjoying this beautiful spring weather while we can. Taco Tuesday is also back this month on May 14th, and Chef is putting his own twist on it this time. We're calling it El Chef's Taco Tuesday, and it's going to feature some of Chef Gavirio's favorite street tacos, Borracho beans, Mexican street corn, and vanilla flan for dessert. This is going to be a Taco Tuesday you don't want to miss. Then we're wrapping up the month of May with a duo of classic southern cuisine that you'll want to start making some room for today! Together at last—incredible chicken fried steak and fried chicken—in one place, at one time. Your dreams will officially come true. You can reserve your table today for Chicken Fried Steak & Chicken Night on Tuesday, March 28th. You'll find menus, drink specials, and reservations for all of this and more below.
Finally, we'll finish off the month with a great country club Sunday tradition. Sunday Brunch with Live Music returns on May 26th. Come enjoy a relaxing Sunday morning at the Club with a wonderful buffet featuring your favorite brunchy cuisine, beautiful views, great live music, and of course, a Mimosa or two.
We have a busy month ahead. Keep your Bentwater Mobile App close at hand, make those reservations early, and try something new this May. We'll see you at the Club!

Golf Club Newsletter - May 2024
Dear Members,
It's hard to believe that it is May already! The year is flying by, and as we inch closer to summer, here are a few items from the Golf Operation to be aware of this month:
Course Care & Player Responsibility
It has been a while since I made course care and player responsibility the main topic of my newsletter. Recently, I have been receiving a lot of feedback from members that many of their peers are not respecting the golf courses. Whether it be reports of members not filling their divots, or pictures emailed to me of members driving their carts in areas that they shouldn't be driving, I want to reiterate the importance of player responsibility as it relates to caring for the courses.
One of the principles of life for responsible individuals is to leave things better than you found them. The principle is especially important for golfers. Every time a player heads out to play, they spend the entire round damaging the golf course. Whether it is taking a divot, creating a ball mark, or even just driving their golf cart on the fairway, they are creating damage that someone has to fix to keep the course in good condition for everyone else. While the maintenance crew works hard to keep the golf courses in the best conditions possible, it is the responsibility of ALL golfers to be respectful and follow proper golf etiquette each and every time they play. Nobody enjoys cleaning up other people's messes, so make sure you are doing your part and educating your friends to do their part to care for the courses in the following ways:
1) Repair your Divots – We have plenty of sand available, so make sure your sand bottles are full before you head out to play. Make sure to fill your divots, and feel free to go the extra mile and fill any other unfilled divots you see.
How to repair a divot: Click Here
2) Repair your Ball Marks – Unrepaired ball marks not only create poor putting surfaces, but the grass dies and leaves unsightly marks on the green. Make sure to repair any ball marks you make.
How to repair a ball mark: Click Here
3) Raking Bunkers – Although bunkers are hazards that you want to avoid, nobody wants to arrive at their ball to find that it has ended up in a footprint or an unraked area. Please do your part and rake any bunkers you happen to end up in.
4) Follow Proper Golf Cart Etiquette – Golf carts single handedly produce more damage to the golf course than anything else. Golfers rarely realize the amount of turf wear and soil compaction that cart traffic produces, or the toll that it takes on the overall condition of the golf course. Carts are ALWAYS damaging the golf course no matter what the conditions are. Most golfers understand the rutting damage carts do when the course is too wet, but fail to realize the damage carts do the rest of the time.
a) Cart traffic weakens grass leaving it susceptible to wilt. When grass wilts, it opens the door to the encroachment of Poa Annua, Goosegrass, and other weeds.
b) Cart traffic creates soil compaction, which can be even more debilitating in the long run. Soil compaction inhibits good water infiltration, reduces oxygen content, and restricts the growth of the turfgrass which leads to weak grass and poor conditions.
The simplest things you can do when riding in a cart is to remember the following:
- Follow the daily Cart Rules that are posted
- Do not drive carts within 30 yards of the green unless you are on the cart path
- Keep carts on the path at all times on ALL par 3 holes.
- Do not drive onto or close to any tee box unless you are on the cart path
- Don't drive in Penalty Areas or Bunkers
- Be aware of low soggy spots and avoid driving through them
- Be respectful and pair up in carts whenever possible – Additional carts just create additional damage.
Proper Cart Etiquette: Click Here
One of my goals while I am at Bentwater is to keep the golfer's responsibility of caring for the golf course at the top of everyone's mind. When everyone makes it a priority to care for the course, everybody wins. So next time you are out to play, make sure you leave the golf course better than you found it.
The Amazing Hailee Cooper!
Last month, our hometown hero, Hailee Cooper,
participated in the Augusta National Women's Amateur and made the cut in her
last tournament as an amateur golfer. For
those who missed her story, here is a great article NBC Sports wrote about
her: Click Here
Right after her trip to Augusta, Hailee turned pro and headed off to Lake Charles to play in the L'Auberge Lake Charles Championship, which is stop on the Annika All Pro Women's Tour. Well, she definitely did not disappoint in her first professional tournament. With a 54-Hole total of 12 under par, Hailee lapped the 104-player field and won the tournament by 6 shots, took home a $10,000 1st place check, and earned an exemption into an upcoming Epson Tour event! Congratulations Hailee!

Summer Aerification Schedule
Aerification isn't the most exciting topic in the world, but it is a necessary agronomy practice and one that helps our maintenance team deliver the best conditions possible. This is a reminder that aerification of the courses begins right after Memorial Day, so please plan accordingly. Here is the complete aerification schedule:
1st Aerification
- Miller – Course Closed from Tuesday, May 28th – Friday, June 7th
- Weiskopf – Course Closed from Monday, June 17th – Friday, June 28th
- Grand Pines – Course Closed from Monday, July 8th – Friday, July 19th
2nd Aerification

- Weiskopf – Course Closed from Monday, August 5th - Wednesday, August 7th
- Grand Pines – Course Closed from Monday, August 12th – Thursday, August 15th
Have a fantastic May, and as always, remember to rake the traps, fill your divots, fix your ball marks, and post all your acceptable scores to GHIN. We look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Becoming a good putter is the quickest way to lower your scores. Becoming a great putter doesn't take any size or strength, so literally anyone can become good at putting with the correct fundamentals and some practice. During this clinic, we will cover the fundamentals putting including short putts, medium putts, lag putts and reading the green.
This clinic is designed for ladies looking to save strokes around the green.

If we receive an overwhelming response, we may rotate players on and off the court as needed, so we're limiting registration to 40 participants to ensure smooth proceedings.
After tennis, all are invited to gather at the Clubhouse for an optional lunch. Each player will be responsible for their own lunch. To assist the restaurant in preparing, please indicate whether you plan to attend lunch or not. This isn't a lunch reservation, just a headcount to aid in preparations.

FITNESS CENTER
MAY 2024
We're pretty lucky here in Texas, we don't have to wait for summer to start enjoying pool season. May always brings with it just enough heat to make those swimming pools start calling your name. But that does raise an interesting question, when does summer begin? For many, Memorial Day (May 27th) is the mile marker on the calendar. For others, the summer solstice (June 20th) is the official starting point. But at the Fitness Center, we have our own indicator that summer has in fact arrived: Water Aerobics! That's right. When Water Aerobics appears on the group fitness calendar, summer has begun, and it's time to get back in the pool. There isn't a more refreshing way to start your day and keep you looking and feeling great all summer. We offer classes Monday through Saturday at both the Yacht Club and Sports Club pools. All classes begin at 8:00 a.m., and just like all of our group fitness classes, they are included in your membership for those holding a Sports Club and above membership level. So, bring a pool noodle, if you have one, and come enjoy the fun!
Pool season also means it's time for swim lessons. Every kid should know how to swim, and the Sports Club Pool is a great place to learn. Bentwater is proud to once again be partnering with Manta Swim Academy to bring our members excellent swim instruction right here in the neighborhood. Lessons are now available for kids of all ages and ability levels. Both individual and group lessons are available. Full details and registration can be found below.
Have a great month, and try something new!

Dear Club Members,
We are excited to announce the return of Kamp Bentwater for Summer 2024! To provide the highest quality summer camp experience for our growing youth members, we have once again partnered with KE Camps to run our summer camp this year. We believe this is an opportunity to provide our membership with the best camp services, run by experienced camp professionals.
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the KE Camps program, we would like to take this opportunity to tell you more about it. KE Camps works exclusively with private clubs across the country to provide an expertly run and well-rounded camp experience. Their mission is to infuse the warmth and spirit of a traditional summer camp within the unique setting of our club. The KE Camps team looks forward to passing on their love of camp to your family this summer.
While KE Camps operates over 250 camps nationwide during the season, Kamp Bentwater is customized to our needs, utilizing Bentwater Yacht and Country Club's top-notch amenities, beautiful property, and athletic professionals. For the past 7 years, KE Camps has blended seamlessly with the atmosphere and flow of our daily club life. With that in mind, we keep the size of camp small, limited to a maximum of 35 campers per week.
What will KE Camps do for Bentwater Yacht and Country Club?
- KE Camps will create and maintain a Kamp Bentwater webpage on the KE Camps website (https://kecamps.com/camps/bentwater-yacht-and-country-club), where you can view camp information and details. In addition, KE Camps will provide camp-related information to your family leading up to camp and throughout the summer.
- KE Camps will recruit, hire, and train all camp staff, each of whom will have a passion for working with children in a camp setting. In addition to an extensive interview process, this includes performing appropriate background and reference checks, as well as requiring all staff members to be First Aid and CPR trained (at a minimum). The staff will consist of an on-site Camp Director as well as a team of camp counselors to provide an average staff to camper ratio of 6:1. In addition to being the primary contact for our families during the camp season, the Camp Director will work closely with the KE Camps management team as well as our own management staff to coordinate the details and logistics of camp. Information about our Camp Director will be provided as we get closer to the opening day of camp.
- KE Camps will handle all camper registrations through their website, including collecting camper information (health histories, allergies, etc.), billing, and customer service. Located in New Jersey, the KE Camps management team is accessible year-round. During the summer, office hours are extended so you will always be able to connect with someone for any questions or concerns that come up. Communication with the KE Camps team includes phone, email, and live chat via their website.
- KE Camps will plan and implement
age-appropriate programming for our campers, ages 4 to 12. KE Camps is committed
to providing a dynamic camp schedule, where campers will
participate in a combination of athletic, creative, and educational
activities – all while thriving

Marina Newsletter - May 2024
I love May. Cinco de Mayo, Armed Forces Day, Mother's Day, and Memorial Day weekend, what a line-up! May sure does offer up some spectacular opportunities to enjoy with family and commemorate those we are grateful for.
If you plan to get out on the boat, do some backyard BBQing, or hang out poolside for fun in the sun with family and friends these next few holiday weekends, check out the Bentwater Online Store. I'm excited to announce that we now offer the Bentwater Marina logo on all of the SUPER COOL summertime merchandise in the Store! Give your wife or mom the perfect gift for pool season, or your husband something that is sure to impress at the Memorial Day BBQ.
We have accessories like coolers, tumblers, towels, backpacks, speakers, and very convenient tote bags for your poolside gear.
Look in the Youth section if you're trying to get your little man or lady ready for summer with their very own Bentwater Marina gear. Their section is full of hats, t-shirts, long sleeves for those few crisp mornings we have left, and some really neat polo shirts that will have the kids feeling and looking like a million bucks!
Ladies, treat yourself this Mother's Day, or just because... who's keeping track anyway? We have a variety of top brands like Charles River, Lululemon, Southern Tide, and so much more. I'm certain we have the gear to help you stand out this summer!
Men, whether you are looking to make a statement this season or take a more subtle approach to summer, the Bentwater Online Store has what you need. Johnnie-O, Cutter & Buck, Swannie's, and Turtleson are just a few of the many brands that will have you making a statement at this year's functions. Also check out brands like Champion, Bella Canvas, and Ogio for really nice Bentwater logoed T-shirts.
The Bentwater Online Store has some of the coolest patterns I've ever seen on hats! You can get the Imperial Alter Ego Cap in a variety of patterns: lobsters, shamrocks, the Jolly Roger Flag, tropical themes, and so much more! Imperial doesn't stop just there; the Mahalo and Aloha caps are putting off some serious summer vibes. Look at those models, along with their Visors and the Oxford Bucket!
Here is the link to the Bentwater Online Store and the newly added Bentwater Marina Logo: https://shop.bentwater.com.
In addition to the great new merchandise in the Online Store, the Ship Store itself is stocked-up with an abundance of new merchandise to make your day on the lake or at the pool one for the books!
We've got everything, from important maintenance items for your boat, to Colombia fishing shirts, sunscreen, fishing bait, snacks, drinks, ice cream, popsicles, cold beer, bags of ice, logoed card keepers, boat batteries and more!
Finally, I want to thank all of our Members for being so patient with us during the Re-Decking Projects on Docks 1 & 2. I understand these larger scale projects can be disruptive to our daily routines and spring activities. So, I felt a special thank you is in order to those affected by these projects. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding while we made these improvements to Marina. I'm very happy to announce that the Decking project has concluding, and it's smooth sailing ahead for the remainder of the 2024 Boating Season.
Thank you all for your continued support of The Marina at Bentwater and Happy Boating! Call us at 936-597-2556 or stop by the Ship Store Tues – Sun from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Things to look for this Month:

Membership Newsletter - May 2024
Happy May! In the second installment of our Website 101 series, we are going to learn how to view your Club account. Once you have logged in, you will see My Account located in the top blue band stretching across the screen. Click on those words, and you will be redirected to your Account Summary page. (NOTE: If this is your first time to login, please view the Login Instructions found below.)
On this page, you can view previous billing statements going back 12 months. Just click on the month that you would like to view, and you will be able to see all charges and payments made that month. Click on Account Summary (located in the black bar below the banner picture) to get back to the main page.
Click on Statement Period to view your current billing statement. Here you will see the date of each charge and the description or location. The next column is where you can see the actual receipt. Say it is a grill charge; looking at the chit, you can see the time you were there, how many were in your party, your server, and each item that was ordered. Viewing the receipt can refresh your memory and save you from having to make a call to accounting to verify the charge.
Going back to the top line, the next heading you'll see is Credit Book. This is where you can see any credits that you may have in the golf shop. An example of a credit would be a monetary credit in the golf shop given as a prize in a tournament. Note that all credits expire on December 31st of each year.
Remember that our billing statements run from the 1st of the month through the end of each month. Your statement dated April 30th will include any charges that you made to your account during the month of April, along with your membership dues for May. This statement is due on or before May 20th. If your account is set up on auto draft, your bank account will be debited on the 20th (unless, of course, the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday).
If you still have a question regarding your club statement, there is a place here to contact accounting. Clicking here will allow you to email your question directly to our accounting department. Someone will get back to you shortly.
This time of year is perfect for outdoor activities. The lower temperatures and humidity make everyone want to get out on the golf course or hit the courts. Remember that the Fitness Center's Water Aerobics sessions begin this month! If you would like to add golf, fitness, or tennis privileges to your membership, please contact me. I would be happy to speak with you about our membership program options as well as our interest-free payment plans for upgrading. Why not call today?!?
I can be reached by phone at 936-597-2204, or at [email protected]. Talk to you soon.

Golf Course Maintenance Newsletter - May 2024
Our spring grow-in and recovery from winter continued nicely throughout April, and all three courses are on track and positioned well for a fun summer of golf here at Bentwater. Last month, we sodded several of our weaker tees on Miller that historically come out of the dormant months a little thin, and those are looking great now.
Some of you may have noticed patches of yellowing in various areas throughout the courses. This is due to our weed eradication program that has been ongoing for about 6-weeks now. Grassy weeds such as crabgrass, Dallisgrass, sedges, and even St. Augustine grass pop-up this time of the year, and all of them are on the hit list. This program will continue through the summer, and we should have a very weed free and clean course afterwards.
Later this month we will begin our first of two greens aerifications on each course. The schedule is as follows:
Miller
May 28th - June 7th
July 29th - 31st
Weiskopf
June 17th - June 28th
August 5th - August 7th
Grand Pines
July 8th- July 19th
August 12th – August 15th
The first aerification is typically our more aggressive of the two, and that takes approximately 2-3 weeks to fully heal. These aerifications are necessary to provide excellent turf conditions throughout the year.
Thank you and we'll see you on the course!
Brian Buckner
Director of Agronomy
